I’m here again at the place of uncertainty. Uncertainty about what the future looks like. Well, not even the distant future. That sounds like a luxury. I’m thinking more along the lines of next week; the next month even. Yet, Maybe there is beauty in uncertainty. The beauty, the brilliance in uncertainty is that it causes us to look for certainty.
This search for certainty can be a gold mine. Or it can leave us frustrated, anxious and fearful because we can’t seem to find what we are looking for. I remember sitting in a class once and our lecturer said that two things every mind seeks out and thrives on are certainty and uncertainty. The human mind and emotion are programmed to desire both of these.
So we look for this certainty in relationships, but our husband/boyfriend leaves us. We look for it in our jobs. But the job we use to thank God for is unable to pay the bills. We look to our role as mom, daughter, wife, friend to provide certainty for us. Yet, all those relationships ebb and flow with the passing of time. Kids no longer need our taxi services to dance, soccer, and friends houses. Parents slip away into eternity. And seasons have a way of changing friendships.
So what’s left?
When everything in this earthly life seems to be subject to uncertainty, where can we find the certainty that seems to be an innate desire within us all?
Outside of Jesus, nowhere. We find certainty in Him alone.
Our hearts, our souls, have been intrinsically wired to long for certainty. Our hearts have been hardwired for Him. We are set up to find Him when we go looking for sustainability and certainty. He is the gold mine it is possible to find in the search for certainty. He is the beauty in the uncertainty.
People have created idols and fake gods to try and create their own certainty, but they fall short. You cannot fill a hole in your longing heart for certainty with a lump of carved wool or manicured ceramic. You need a grand God. A God who says “I AM, WHO I AM”. “I’m not changing. I’m sovereign and strong. I am kind and comforting. I am gentle and just. I am the one you need. I am the one you long for. I am the certainty amidst uncertainty. I am the everlasting one who is the same in the beginning as I will be in the end. I AM WHO I AM. I am more than enough to fulfill your longing for certainty.”
A life with God is filled with the unknown and certainty. Life with God is an adventure designed to fill what psychologist says is our innate desire for adventure and the unknown. Yet, He is big enough to fulfill our desire for certainty because of His character that is never changing and always constant. If we are brave enough to dive into our longings head on we will always find that Jesus is the answer to the longing. He is the beauty in uncertainty.
